What is SMA?
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuro muscular disease caused by a deletion and/or mutation of the SMN1 gene. This gene is responsible for the production of a protein which is essential to the proper working of the motor neurons. The lack of protein causes the motor neurons in the spinal cord to deteriorate resulting in SMA.
Did You Know?
Approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carrier of the gene that causes SMA. Of children diagnosed before age two, 50 percent will die before their second birthday. SMA can strike anyone of any race or gender.
